Property tax by state

Typical effective rate = median tax paid ÷ median home value, Census survey 2020-2024. Tap a column to sort.

How to read this

The typical rate compares what homeowners actually pay with what their homes are worth, so states with very different tax systems can be compared fairly. Across the US, the typical owner pays $3,119 a year, about 0.94% of a $332,700 home.

A low rate does not always mean a low bill. Where homes are expensive, a low rate can still produce a large bill. The share of income column shows how heavy the typical bill is for local households.
